James Horton was the first child of John Horton & Emma Hartill born March 29th, 1871 at 6 Gordon Place, The Straits, Cotwallend, Sedgley, Staffs.
In 1881 James, his parents & brother & sister were living at 6 Gordon’s Place, Cotwallend, Sedgley. They were living with his maternal grandmother Ann & her second husband Joseph Hickman.
The family were still at the same address in 1891 & James was working as a house painter.
James married Sarah Ann Jones on May 27th, 1900 at Sedgley, Staffs. Sarah Ann was born c1873 at The Straits, Sedgley, Staffs, the daughter of Ann & William Jones, a wood sawyer.
In 1911 James & Sarah were living at 57 Gospelend Road, Sedgley & James was still a house painter. They now had 2 daughters – Dorothy (7) & May (3).
Daughter Dorothy married Leonard Fones in 1931 in Dudley & in 1939 they were living in Sedgley where Leonard was a house decorator.
The 1939 register shows widowed James living at 18 Dudley St, Sedgley where he was still a painter decorator. With him was daughter Gladys May who was the housekeeper. Later that year Gladys married Frederick Smith.
James died on November 26th, 1950 at 18 Dudley St, Sedgley. Probate was granted to son-in-law Frederick Smith, chargehand & Leonard Jones, maintenance engineman. James’ effects were £1,458.19s.8d.
